Game notes from UK’s 62-45 Sweet 16 win over Cornell

- UK defeated Cornell 62-45 in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. The win moves UK’s record to 35-2 on the season, while Cornell fails to advance to their first Elite Eight in program history.

- UK will face West Virgina in the Elite Eight on Saturday at 7 p.m. with a bid to the Final Four up for grabs.

- A No. 1 seed still has never lost to a No. 12 seed. UK improved that record to 17-0 since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams.

- UK moves one-win closer to North Carolina on the all-time NCAA Tournament wins list. UK now has 101 wins in the Big Dance with the Heels sitting idly at 102.

- The 35th win for UK ties UK head coach John Calipari with Tubby Smith as the most wins by a UK head coach in his inaugural season. Smith led the Cats to 35 wins a national championship in his inaugural season in 1998.

- UK has not been to a Final Four since 1998. The 12-year absence is the longest in UK basketball history.

- UK closed the first half on a 30-6 run.

- UK was led by a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds from freshman forward DeMarcus Cousins.

- Junior forward Patrick Patterson had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Cats. Patterson also had nine points and three blocks.

- Freshman guard John Wall finished with eight points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

- Eric Bledsoe joined Cousins as the only two UK players to reach double figures in points. Bledsoe had a dozen points.

- With Cousins nursing a tight back, freshman forward Daniel Orton played 13 minutes and scored three points and blocked two shots.

- UK dominated Cornell in the paint. The Cats outscored the Big Red 36-12 down low.

- After starting the game 2-10 from the foul line, UK finished the final 4:32 of the game going 14-16 from the charity stripe. The Cats led by only eight with 4:32 left, they won by 17.

- UK was just 2-for-16 from deep, 0-7 in the second half. Cornell entered the game as the most accurate 3-point shooting team in the country, shooting 43.4 percent from beyond the arc, but was 5-21 against UK.

- Former Cat and current Big Red forward, Mark Coury, played 13 minutes. Coury was 0-2 from the floor, and was held scoreless, but did pull down two rebounds (one offensive, one defensive).

- UK shot 44 percent from the field and Cornell shot 33.3 percent.

- Attendance was 22,271.
