UK baseball opens season with 15-6 win over Hokies

It didn’t take long for the bats on the UK baseball team (1-0) to heat up.

The Cats opened their season with an emphatic 15-6 win over Virginia Tech (0-1) in the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

UK had five players register at least five RBI in the game, and scored eight runs in the bottom of the third to blow the game open.

The inning started with a single by sophomore left fielder Chad Wright and featured seven UK hits, a VT error and zero runners left on base.

Junior second baseman Chris Bisson led the Cats with four hits, two RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Sophomore third baseman Andy Burns and senior center fielder Keenan Wiley each had home runs, and eight of the Cats’ nine position players registered hits.

Sophomore pitcher Alex Meyer threw five innings, striking out eight and allowing two earned runs on four hits.

While registering two errors, the Cats also got 15 hits.

Matt Little, a junior college transfer from Virginia Beach, Va., came in for 1.1 innings of relief pitching. Little didn’t allow a hit.

The Cats will play again Saturday at noon against West Virginia. UK played West Virginia once last year, in Charleston, W.V., and lost 10-7.
