7 Cats earn All-SEC honors [UPDATED]
Seven UK players were named All-SEC performers in football earlier this week.
Sophomore Randall Cobb was the only UK player named first team All-SEC by the AP. He was named to the team as an all-purpose player after racking up 427 receiving yards, 537 rushing yards and scoring 15 touchdowns while also helping out by returning kicks and punts.
Senior defensive tackle Corey Peters, senior linebacker Sam Maxwell and junior tailback Derrick Locke were named second team All-SEC by the AP as well. Senior offensive lineman Zipp Duncan was an honorable mention All-SEC pick in his first year playing left tackle.
Peters was named first team All-SEC by the league coaches on Wednesday, the only Cat to garner that honor. Senior linebacker Micah Johnson and senior cornerback Trevard Lindley were both named second team All-SEC after spurning last year’s NFL draft to come back to school. Duncan was also a second team All-SEC selection.
Update
Cobb was also named first team All-SEC by ESPN.com blogger Chris Low. Cobb was the only Cat named to Low’s team.
However, Low did name UK his “Biggest surprise” of the year in the SEC. Here’s a snippet of what he had to say:
“…with all of the injuries the Wildcats suffered, and losing star defensive end Jeremy Jarmon before the season due to an NCAA suspension, it’s the kind of season few people saw the Big Blue having. Rich Brooks has done a super job with this program…”
Defensive end Taylor Wyndham was named a freshman All-American by Phil Steel. Wyndham had 27 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups, two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He started the last six games of the season.
