For the second time in two years, the UK volleyball team had a chance to take one of the biggest steps in the history of the program. UK lost to Tennessee in five sets with a chance to win the SEC championship on Wednesday night.

Last year, UK lost to Tennessee in the final regular season match with a chance to win a share of the SEC championship on the line.

But this year was different. UK went down to Gainesville earlier in the season and beat Florida, which has won the SEC each of the last 18 years. That streak ends, but Craig Skinner has to be a bit worried about his team. Going into the final week of the season, he made the Cats off-limits to the media so they wouldn’t be distracted.

They promptly dropped their last two matches of the year to fall back to Earth in the SEC.

The NCAA tournament selections will be on Sunday. There’s no worry about whether or not the Cats will be there – but now you have to wonder how mentally tough this team is.
